My own passion for scaling ecom businesses started over 20 years ago. Fresh out of college, I launched an online used bookshop. (Delightfully cringe name? Lit4Less.) The profits from that venture paid my way through grad school, where I earned my MFA in Writing at Columbia—solid training for writing ecom copy!—while taking B-school classes on Internet marketing and sales.
Running this small-scale ecom biz was my real Entrepreneurship 101: from managing tens of thousands of SKUs to building an inventory management software to becoming best friends with packing tape. Later, I launched another project, helping nonprofits set up online stores to fuel their fundraising.
Along the way, I fell hard for copywriting—the kind that converts, the kind that stands out in a sea of AI-generated blah. My time at Google only sharpened my love for the world of SEO and SEM and digital marketing.
