Who are your Writing Pros?

Our exclusive network contains more than 1,000 U.S.-based professional journalists and writers with extensive experience writing for top publications (e.g., The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch) and leading brands from startups to Fortune 500s.

Writers are carefully vetted three separate times:

1. For inclusion in the exclusive Prose Media network

2. For the unique skills required to tackle your individual project. We select a writer for your project based on their proven expertise in your specific industry, their expertise with your content type, and the suitability of their writing style.

3. For retention in our network. We regularly review the performance of every writer based on our editors’ ratings and our clients’ feedback.

How are writers selected for the Prose network?

Writers are thoroughly vetted in a rigorous screening process. Prose accepts only a tiny percentage of writers who apply, making us one of the most — if not the most — competitive content writer networks in the world.

Writers submit a formal application that includes their résumé, writing samples, list of previous notable clients and publications, and links to online properties (e.g., LinkedIn profile, social media accounts, personal website / portfolio, and blog), among other information.

In reviewing a writer's credentials, our editors consider several criteria:

  • Overall writing ability
  • Degree of industry and topic expertise
  • Level of expertise in specific content formats
  • Depth and breadth of education and professional background
  • Indications of personal qualities (e.g., reliability, ethics)

The strength of an individual’s writing samples remains the truest test. A writer’s work must speak for itself.

Not all services vet their writers, and some do so only through the filter of junior employees or basic grammar tests. At Prose, vetting is core to our operations and performed by our top editors and CEO.

How are writers matched with my projects?

Prose has developed an unparalleled matchmaking process. Based on your specific project brief and general brand guidelines, we pair your unique writing needs with the best possible writing talent.

Unlike most writing services, we take the time to pair manually — hand-picking qualified wordsmiths rather than mass-inviting hundreds of people from a database.

When you order content, we choose a writer for your project based on A) your preferences, B) writing ability and style, and C) Prose network considerations. All in all, we use eight primary criteria:

A) YOUR PREFERENCES

1. Writer tier. Based on your budget and needs, you select your preferred tier: Standard, Expert, or Premium.

2. Previous experience writing for you. Assuming you were pleased with their work, we make every effort to use the same writer(s) again.

B) WRITING ABILITY AND STYLE

3. Subject matter expertise. The writer must have experience writing about your industry and/or sub-industry or topic. We not only ask writers to indicate their area of industry expertise, but also “green light” writers for specific industries based on their credentials, past client list, and writing sample(s).

4. Content format expertise. The writer must have demonstrated ability to write your desired content type (e.g., blog posts, white papers, website copy, etc.). We not only ask writers to indicate their content expertise, but also “green light” writers for specific content types based on their credentials, past client list, and writing sample(s).

5. Style and tone. The writer must be able to meet the style guidelines for the specific project as well as for your brand. In the case of ghostwriting, that “style” extends to the voice of an individual executive. Whether you want light and breezy (à la BuzzFeed), insightful and journalistic (like The New York Times), or academic and technical (like a trade journal), Prose has the talent to deliver.

C) PROSE NETWORK CONSIDERATIONS

6. Previous performance at Prose. Our writers are regularly rated by clients and assessed by our editors, so the most effective and reliable writers rise to the top. In assigning work, we prioritize writers who have submitted the best content in the past.

7. Availability. The writer must be available to complete the project by your desired deadline and available for several weeks afterward for any revision requests.

8. Writer interest and capability. Before claiming a project, a writer must confirm that he or she is actively interested in the project, understands the subject matter, meets the requirements, and is committed to crafting high-quality content.

What is the difference between Standard, Expert, and Premium writers?

We offer carefully vetted talent at three tiers of experience and expertise: Standard, Expert, and Premium. Please check out our Writer Tiers page for more details.

If I choose a Standard writer, will I still receive quality content?

Yes; we invite only the most talented writers and copywriters into our selective network. Standard writers are typically earlier in their careers, but they have undergone the same rigorous vetting process. Every writer must submit a portfolio of written work, which we carefully review to make sure that the writer is capable of the high quality our clients require. Not only are all Writing Pros vetted three times, but an expert editor reviews every piece of submitted content before it reaches your desk.

How well can a writer really know my industry?

Our Writing Pros possess expertise in more than 50 industries and sub-industries. (Click the link to see a list of the brands in your industry that our writers have written for, either independently or via Prose.)

Unlike most writing services, we will always assign your project to a Writing Pro who has familiarity with your industry. Quite often, the Pro will also have familiarity with the individual topic within the industry. We vet our Writing Pros carefully and assess their skills after each project, based on editor and client feedback, to make sure that they are performing as expected.

A writer’s degree of industry expertise is one of the factors reflected in our writer tiers—Standard, Expert, and Premium.

To assess our ability to write about your industry or topic, you may also request confidential writing samples.

Can you match our brand voice? How do you do it?

We can match any voice. Every voice. In short — your voice.

No one understands as well as we do how important it is for your content to express the voice and signature style of your brand. That’s why we give you a personal editor whose role is to ensure that your content reflects your brand’s established voice and style. How do we do this?

The process of capturing your signature style starts at the very beginning, with our proprietary briefing process. The first step in ordering content is to fill out a short but thoughtful content brief. Our questions are quick but thorough, and we ask the right ones. We will also happily read any brand materials that you provide, including your website and previously published materials.

Once we’ve identified your content needs and stylistic preferences, we locate the perfect writer in our network of more than 1,000+ professional writers. The size of our network guarantees that we can find someone familiar with your industry who has (1) experience with your particular content type and (2) a writing style to match your brand voice.

We look for a writer who has:

  • The perfect style for your content type. Whether you want punchy, personable posts for your social media accounts, or a batch of white papers rich with technical detail, we’ll find a writer with expertise in that content type — and the portfolio to prove it.

  • The perfect style for your brand voice. Whether your voice is warm and fuzzy, terse and techy, or dashing and dynamic, we give you a writer who has produced work for brands like yours, with writing samples to match.

Many writing services stumble when it comes to ghostwritten content. If you’ve order ghostwritten content (such as blog posts, bylined articles, or speeches) to publish under your name or the name of a company executive, we’ll take extra care to educate ourselves in the nuances of the person’s voice by reading (or watching, or listening to) any previously published materials, or any materials that they admire and would like to emulate. Then we choose a writer with the right voice — but we also edit the content carefully to make sure that it not only sounds like you, but it sounds like you at your best.

Can the same writer(s) be used for all of our projects?

Yes. Whenever you’re pleased with a piece of content, we will make every effort to use the same writer on your future projects. By giving the writer the opportunity to develop increased familiarity with your brand’s preferences, we help to ensure your ongoing satisfaction.

But we also go one step further. To ensure we can meet any deadline and write precisely to your specs across a wide range of content types, we also often build a team of writers for your account. This helps avoid delays should your regular writer(s) not be available.

And there's more….

The Prose reputation for strong, consistent content is based not only on (1) great writing, but also on (2) great editing and (3) effective account management.

Other writing services rely only on individual writers for consistency. But what happens if that writer is sick, on vacation, tied up, switches jobs — or no longer suits your needs? You're back at square one, spending valuable time training another person.

At Prose, a seasoned editor who is familiar with your unique style and brand will review and refine every piece of content we create for you, so that your brand voice remains consistent no matter what. Finally, our system remembers and preserves your brand guidelines, so that our knowledge of your preferences is never lost. With Prose, you are assured of a consistent flow of high-quality content no matter what.

Can I choose my own writers?

At Prose, we choose the writers for you. You’ll never waste time scrolling through profiles, interviewing writers, and vetting candidates the way you have to with most freelance marketplaces.

While some services offer you the option of choosing your own writers, this simply shifts the burden of reviewing qualifications, credentials, content type expertise, and writing samples onto you, slowing down the process of content creation without increasing the quality of the content you receive. Even after you’ve chosen some writers you prefer, you face time-consuming negotiations to determine their availability or non-availability at the rates and for the deadline you’ve specified.

All of this would be fine, except for one thing: From long experience, we’ve discovered that clients more often than not end up unhappy with the writers they’ve chosen for themselves, while they are typically very happy with the writers we choose for them.

In the end, there’s simply no match for our years of experience when it comes to discerning what qualifications will produce what results.

Our ability to form expert matches — behind the scenes and without involving clients in all the tedious details of the matchmaking — is core to our process and key to our clients' success.

Of course, no matter who selects your writer, there’s no guarantee that you won’t have to request revisions. In fact, choosing your own writer can in many cases increase the likelihood that the content will need to be revised. That’s why at Prose we place equal responsibility on the writer and the editor to guarantee quality. With top-notch, in-house editing and two rounds of revision provided as a standard part of every package, we are confident that you will be satisfied with the content we create.

If you would like additional information or have specific concerns, please contact us.

Will I be communicating with a writer directly?

No — your smart, friendly, reliable in-house editor will do that for you. Serving as your account manager and point of contact, your personal editor will manage each of your projects and facilitate a smooth-running process from A to Z.

We offer you three main ways to communicate your needs and preferences:

  • By submitting the initial project brief
  • By requesting revisions
  • By contacting us at any time

Dedicated project management by an experienced editor does more than just streamline communications and ensure efficiency. It gives you the cost savings of freelance writers without the headache of guiding and educating them — and you gain an extra level of quality control. (See a comparison of freelance sites and Prose.)

If your goals include long-term consistency, quality control, and/or scale, we think you'll love this system.

Are your writers based in the U.S.?

The vast majority of writers are based in the U.S. We also have some excellent native-English-speaking writers located in other parts of the world, from Europe to the Middle East to Australia.
